The Open Group to Develop Certification Program for Distributed Management Task Force's Common Information Model

San Francisco, CA - April 1, 2002 - The Open Group today announced that it has been chosen by Distributed Management Task Force, Inc. (DMTF) to develop a certification program for the Common Information Model (CIM), an object-oriented paradigm developed by DMTF that defines management information concerning computing and networking equipment, services, software and operating environments. The program will allow vendors to certify their products for conformance to the CIM standard, ensuring the interoperability of CIM implementations industry-wide.

CIM is comprised of a specification that defines the object-oriented constructs and language for specifying management information, and a schema that provides the actual model descriptions. By adopting CIM as a basis for their product development, technology vendors can help their customers manage their distributed IT environment as a whole, and not as a series of disparate components. As vendors develop and certify their products to be CIM-compliant, customers will benefit from greater flexibility and integration in assembling and managing systems and networks that work for them, rather than against them.

"CIM is a valuable tool in today's business world, and a certification program will deliver real business benefits to vendors," said Allen Brown, president and CEO of The Open Group. "The Open Group is delighted to build on our relationship with the DMTF and looks forward to the opportunity to deliver additional programs that increase the effectiveness and value of business tools like CIM."

"We're looking forward to the certification program to drive increased development and broader adoption of products and services that implement CIM, which will help to advance DMTF's goal of realizing interoperable management of all networked devices and applications," said Winston Bumpus, president of DMTF. "Based on its impressive track record of developing similar testing programs and its relationship with the DMTF as an Alliance Partner, The Open Group was the ideal choice to develop our CIM certification program."
