The Open Group Announces Test Development for Single UNIX® Specification 3

“Westwood” Test Suites Are Key to Support of UNIX Certification Program Due in 2003

San Francisco, CA – February 3, 2003 – The Open Group has announced general availability of complete test coverage for the Single UNIX® Specification Version 3. These test suites are integral to the certification program for the Single UNIX Specification Version 3, due to be deployed in the first half of 2003.

“Continuing the evolution of the UNIX certification programs remains an important part of The Open Group’s value to the UNIX systems community,” said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group.

The certification program for the Single UNIX Specification Version 3 builds upon the existing source application program interface (API) test tools. The test suites utilize The Open Group’s Test Environment Toolkit and the VSXgen generic test frameworks, which provide a consistent and extensible environment for test execution.

“Developers, buyers, and manufacturers of conformant products can reap many benefits from these tests,” noted Andrew Josey, Director of Certification for The Open Group. “Among other things, developers can use these test tools in-house as part of the quality assurance cycle through regular regression tests, thereby saving large development and maintenance costs. For buyers, as well as manufacturers of conformant products, these tests ensure standards-based products and provide the most complete set of API conformance test suites for Version 3 of the Single UNIX Specification. It’s also important that the test suites were developed by a vendor-neutral party.”

For further information on obtaining the test suites and to participate in the UNIX certification program please contact Mike Hickey at The Open Group (.m.hickey@opengroup.org ) A datasheet is available at http://www.opengroup.org/platform/unix_certification/.

The Open Group’s mission is to drive the creation of Boundaryless Information Flow by working with customers to capture, understand and address current and emerging requirements, establish policies, and share best practices; working with suppliers, consortia and standards bodies to develop consensus and facilitate interoperability, to evolve and integrate specifications and open source technologies; offering a comprehensive set of services to enhance the operational efficiency of consortia; and developing and operating the industry's premier certification service and encouraging procurement of certified products.

About The Single UNIX® Specification

The Open Group has been the custodian of the specification for the UNIX system and the trademark since 1993. The effort that led to this transfer was the catalyst for all vendors to make their systems conform to this single definition, a goal that had been elusive in previous harmonization efforts. Today all the major vendors support the Single UNIX Specification and have registered product. For more information see http://www.opengroup.org/regproducts/. In keeping with The Open Group's policy for free and open access to its specifications, the Single UNIX Specification is available online at http://www.UNIX-systems.org.

About the Test Environment Toolkit and the VSXgen Test Framework

The Test Environment Toolkit and the VSXgen test framework provide a standard software layer into which test cases can be easily integrated in a modular way. They are widely used in the industry for conformance testing. For more information see http://www.opengroup.org/testing/.
