Reading, UK – Thursday 7 July 2005 – The fast-growing
profession of IT architecture is now the subject of a course
at the University of Reading and, today, 19 students were
presented with their certificates by Allen Brown, President
and CEO of The Open Group which has been based in Reading
for 20 years.
Most people are familiar with architecture in the context
of the building environment, but few appreciate that Information
Technology (IT) systems also depend on a similar “building
block” approach. One such approach is TOGAF (The Open
Group Architecture Framework), a comprehensive architecture
framework and methodology that enables the design, evaluation
and implementation of the right architecture for an enterprise’s
information systems. TOGAF Certification is an assurance
program providing four classes of certification: Certified,
Tool Support, Training and Professional Services. It is used
by architecture service providers, tool vendors and individual
enterprise architects.
Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group, welcomed
the first set of graduates to complete the new Information
Technology Degree course at the University of Reading, UK,
by presenting TOGAF 8 Certified certificates to those who
successfully completed the course on Enterprise IT Architecture,
based around the popular TOGAF methodology.
Breaking away from the traditional technical style of Computer
Science undergraduate degree course, Information Technology
at Reading responds to demands from industry for graduates
who have a better understanding of the use of IT to support
business objectives.
TOGAF represents an ideal vehicle for teaching the linkage
between IT and strategic enterprise goals. The Enterprise
IT Architecture course was designed to fulfill the requirements
for TOGAF 8 Certification, and comprises a rigorous programme
including lectures, substantive course work and a formal
examination.

Presenting certificates to the students who successfully
completed the course, Allen Brown observed, "This is
another indication of the maturity of IT Architecture as
a profession in its own right and the growing value of TOGAF
in this context. In years to come, once they have acquired
the necessary practical experience, I look forward to welcoming
these graduates as fully fledged architects."
At the same ceremony, Allen Brown also presented The Open
Group Prize to the outstanding Enterprise IT Architecture
Student, Kirill Nadysev. Course lecturer and Fellow of The
Open Group, Mike Lambert, praised the work of all the students, "While
the work of all of the students was of excellent quality,
that of Kirill Nadysev, especially his course work assignment,
showed a depth of understanding usually only evident when
dealing with IT architects with many years of experience."
