Open Source LDAP Test Suite Announced by The Open Group

San Francisco, CA – September 8, 2003 – As part of its commitment to sponsoring Open Source projects, The Open Group is now making the Basic Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) Interoperability Test Suite (BLITS) freely available to the public for open source development. BLITS Version 3.0 may be downloaded from http://www.opengroup.org/dif/blits.

BLITS contains specifications of tests that demonstrate interoperability between LDAP client/server pairs. BLITS tests are designed to be performed in a multi-vendor environment, permitting LDAP Version 3 implementers to verify the degree to which basic client/server interaction features of their implementations are interoperable with others.

BLITS includes over 160 test scenarios and associated test data. It is the accepted benchmark for LDAP interoperability, widely used within the industry. It has served as the basis for the Verification Suite for LDAP (VSLDAP) used in The Open Group Directory Interoperability Forum’s (DIF) currently released LDAP Certified Program as well as other LDAP-related testing activities and test suites.

“BLITS has played an important role in enabling The Open Group to develop LDAP-related certification programs,” noted Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group. “It is consistent with our members’ goals and operating procedures to make this valuable test suite an Open Source project.”

Brown continued, “We are also pleased that the original developer, Chris Apple of DSI Consulting, which is a member of The Open Group, has agreed to act as BLITS Editor and Open Source Project Leader.” Apple, who is Principal Architect at DSI Consulting, started BLITS development in 1997 and turned it over to The Open Group after completing the first widely used release for maintenance and evolution.”

Given the role BLITS played in enabling The Open Group to create VSLDAP and the LDAP Certified Program, DSI Consulting felt it was important to make a public commitment to maintaining BLITS,” said Apple, “and what better way to do that than by making BLITS freely available. DSI Consulting also looks forward to improving and expanding BLITS as the LDAP community needs it to evolve.” DSI Consulting, Inc., a Novell Platinum Partner, is a premier provider of Identity Management, Directory, and Security Consulting Services headquartered in Chester, VA.

“The members of the DIF heartily welcome DSI's contribution to our common goal of enabling and promoting Directory Interoperability. The application of Open Source principles to interoperability testing is an exciting development, which we will look to apply to other directory protocols, such as DSML,” said Ed Harrington, Chair of the DIF and CEO of EPH Associates LLC.
