Press Releases
San Francisco, CA – April 9,
2004 – Responding to the DISA decision to transition
DII COE certification to the industry, The Open Group, the
industry’s premier certification authority, launched
the COE Linux Platform certification program.
Based on the DISA Cross Platform Compliance criteria for Linux
systems, the program provides assurance that conforming systems
provide services to COE applications software through conforming
APIs. The program also assures that the systems present a
specific appearance and behavior at the Human-Computer Interface
level, have demonstrated interoperability and data interchange
requirement, and meet a set of security requirements.
The certification program, which is based on industry best
practices, is overseen by The Open Group’s Grid Enterprise
Services (GES) Forum. The program benefits both customers
and vendors by:
- Providing assurance of Linux COE Platform conformance
and interoperability
- Matching the level of assurance to the needs of the particular
application
- Meeting the same levels of assurance as the former DISA
program
- Reducing the costs of getting certified.
"We are pleased that The Open Group introduced this program
as a way for the industry to certify conformance of their
Linux platforms with the COE specification,” said Dawn
Meyerriecks, Principal Director for GIG Enterprise Services,
Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), US Department of
Defense. “This will reduce testing costs and allow the
military to procure Linux systems with the confidence that
they will support warfighters’ needs."
“Conformance to standards is critical for enabling secure
and reliable access to integrated information across systems,
wherever and whenever it is needed,” noted Allen Brown,
President and CEO of The Open Group. “The new Linux
COE Platform certification program provides a choice for procurement
professionals to select the right tool for a particular problem
without having to sacrifice assurance of conformance and interoperability.”
