Press Releases
San Francisco, CA – August 9,
2004 – The challenges of information management
and the need for interoperability and access to integrated
information were at the forefront of the discussions at The
Open Group’s summer conference, Boundaryless Information
Flow™: Enterprise Information Management, which took
place at the Hyatt Harborside Hotel in Boston, MA. Executives
across industries identified interoperability as a critical
enabler.
Stephen James, Director of Strategic Programs, EMC, and Marshall
“Tip” Slater, Deputy Director, Strategic Architecture,
Boeing, discussed the need for interoperability in the defense
sector and introduced a new consortium focused on network
centric operations, which will formally commence its role
in September 2004. The primary objective of the new consortium
is to help customers achieve interoperability by using open
standards and following commercial and defense best practices.
Douglas Barton, Director, Network Centric Programs and Technology,
Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems & Solutions, quoted
Secretary Rumsfeld that interoperability can be simply taking
what we have and making it work together in a way that is
transformational, and emphasized the need for architecture-driven
development to ensure interoperability. The challenge of securing
enterprise information assets when enabling extended business
and efficient business-to-business partnering across companies
in multiple countries was addressed by Stephen Whitlock, IT
Security Architect, Boeing.
The importance of managing information, interoperability and
inter-enterprise connectivity in the healthcare industry was
pointed out by Elliot Stone, Executive Director and CEO of
Massachusetts Health Data Consortium (MHDC) and Michael Brown
MD, CIO of Harvard Health Services (HUHS).
“The Open Group members consider interoperability based
on open standards a key issue and a prerequisite of moving
towards a more boundaryless environment with integrated access
to information,” noted Allen Brown, President and CEO
of The Open Group. “The need for interoperability is
becoming pervasive across industries, and companies look for
assurance that their systems will, indeed, interoperate,”
Brown added. “As a result, we are seeing a tremendous
growth in demand for the interoperable solutions to be certified.”
Other speakers at the conference included:
Professor Alan McAdams from Cornell’s Johnson Graduate
School of Management; Mark Potts, CTO, Strategy and Technology,
Software Global Business Unit from HP; Scott Ogawa, CTO, Children’s
Hospital in Boston; Richard Sturm, President of Enterprise
Management Associates; Dr. Nathaniel Borenstein, Distiguished
