The Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) Has a Date with Compliance

SIF will certify products as “SIF Compliant” beginning January 2003

Dallas, TX - November 13, 2002 – The Schools Interoperability Framework announced today that it has hired The Open Group to assist them with the development and delivery of the SIF Compliance Program. The Open Group is a vendor-neutral and technology-neutral consortium whose expertise spans test development, automated test generation technologies, formal testing for certification, test laboratory quality systems and accreditation and operation of certification programs.

The ultimate goal of the SIF Compliance Program is to certify software applications as 'Compliant' with the SIF Specification. SIF and The Open Group will work together to define the processes, procedures and scope of this program. The program will give schools and school districts the assurance that the applications they are purchasing conform to the SIF Specification and have met external performance criteria. SIF will begin certifying products as “SIF compliant”, beginning in January 2003.

“We are in the final days of completing a project of incredible importance to the K12 community. None of this would be possible without the hard work, dedication and above all, collaboration of our membership, comprised of K12 schools, districts, regional service agencies, states and software companies. As a result of their focused efforts over the past several years, we are pleased to have a timeline for the delivery of SIF Compliance. A new education technology standard is finally within reach, the results of which will be nothing short of revolutionary.” said Tim Magner, Director of The Schools Interoperability Framework.

Commenting on the affect of SIF compliance for vendors and participants, Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group said: "The Schools Interoperability Framework is critical to ensuring that diverse applications within a school system can interact and share data efficiently, this certification program will enable vendors to demonstrate their commitment to the standard and allow customers to be assured that the products they buy will conform to the standard."
