SAN FRANCISCO, September 15, 2008 –The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium focused on open standards and global interoperability within and between enterprises, today announced the availability in the Dutch language of the UDEF (Universal Data Element Framework), a standard information indexing mechanism. This represents the first non-English language in which the standard is available. The Open Group UDEF Project, an initiative that is part of the organization’s Semantic Interoperability Working Group, spearheaded the development and also plans to release the UDEF standard in Chinese, French and German.
The UDEF simplifies information management by assigning global standard identifiers to items of data, ensuring consistent classification and thereby reducing the amount of time that software developers spend mapping between information from different sources, ultimately lowering software costs. As a standard, the UDEF is interoperable and can be used both within and between UDEF-enabled enterprises. The new Dutch-language UDEF standard will allow companies internationally to take advantage of the UDEF’s cost-saving potential, by extending the potential of UDEF across language barriers.
Dr. Chris Harding, Forum Director for SOA and Semantic Interoperability at The Open Group, said: “We view the UDEF as a key tool for enterprise-wide information management, and, ultimately, semantic interoperability. This Dutch translation is an important first step in achieving widespread adoption of the UDEF to support Boundaryless Information Flow™ internationally.”
The goal of The Open Group UDEF Project is for Chinese, French and German components to become available in the future. For more information and to download the UDEF definitions, please visit: http://www.opengroup.org/udefinfo/.
