SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 16, 2007 — The Open Group will sponsor a public demonstration of MILS, an emerging high-assurance and high-robustness security and safety architecture. Department of Defense (DoD) systems integrators Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and Rockwell Collins, as well as Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) vendors Green Hills Software, LynuxWorks, Objective Interface Systems (OIS), and Wind River will present MILS technology to the U.S. defense and security community. Attendees of the demonstration will include representatives from the Department of Defense (DoD), National Security Agency (NSA), Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and others.
These multi-vendor demonstrations will show how MILS can be implemented to protect highly sensitive military and intelligence communications networks, and deliver trusted data to the warfighters, homeland security and first responders at a level not currently attainable with currently deployed technologies. The demonstration will take place on February 1st from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at The Open Group’s upcoming Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference, being held at the Marriott Mission Valley in San Diego.
The result of collaboration among government, the private sector, and academia, is a security architecture called MILS that partitions application programs, data, and communications in distributed systems. MILS allows multiple levels of security domains to exist on a single computer, thereby making it possible to replace several computers with one, and has the potential to dramatically reduce hardware, power, and administrative costs. The significance of MILS is that it makes high assurance systems development, certification, and accreditation more practical, achievable, and affordable.
“The networks of the global financial and commercial communications infrastructure deserve the same protection as those of the military, homeland security and intelligence communities,” said David Lounsbury, vice president of government programs, The Open Group. “We believe MILS offers a huge benefit for military and intelligence organizations as well as the private sector by enabling robust, secure and safe separation of all categories of classified information.”
The Event: MILS, Enabling High Assurance Solutions
The Open Group’s MILS event will feature addresses on solving high assurance challenges from program management and technology perspectives as well as demonstrations of real-world applications running on separation kernels — SKPP compliant real-time operating systems (RTOS) from multiple COTS vendors.
Other highlights of The Open Group’s MILS event include:
- “Certification and Accreditation – Lessons Learned” by Northrop Grumman
- “MILS Architecture: An Infrastructure for Building CDS / MLS Systems” by Lockheed Martin
- “Bringing Cross Domain Solutions to Legacy Platforms” by Rockwell Collins
- Featured Cross Domain Solutions demonstration by Rockwell Collins
- A MILS tutorial Wednesday afternoon January 31, 2007 from 1400-1630 hours by Objective Interface Systems
Other demos will include solutions from Raytheon, Boeing, Green Hills, LynuxWorks, Wind River, Objective Interface Systems, and Intel. Additionally, a reception for all attendees is scheduled immediately following the MILS demonstrations.
