The Open Group Leads the Way with Global Enterprise Architecture Description Language
New Open Group Forum Established to Oversee Development of ArchiMate® Standard for Enterprise Architecture

Munich Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference, Oct. 20, 2008 - The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium focused on open standards and global interoperability within and between enterprises, today announced the formation of a new Forum to oversee development of the ArchiMate® standard. Through The Open Group’s standards work around ArchiMate, the enterprise architecture description language, a path is being paved for the world's first truly global enterprise architecture description language.

The ArchiMate standard originated in 2002 and was initially developed by the Dutch Telematica Institute together with a large market consortium and the ArchiMate Foundation. Since that time it has experienced rapid growth and international adoption within multiple industries. ArchiMate is an open and independent modelling language for enterprise architecture, supported by different tool vendors and consulting firms. ArchiMate provides instruments to support enterprise architects in describing, analyzing and visualizing the relationships among business domains in an unambiguous way.

ArchiMate will deliver a language which has a strategic fit with The Open Group's global flagship standard TOGAF™. TOGAF is the delivery method for enterprise architecture artifacts and ArchiMate is the modelling language. ArchiMate is thus an ideal candidate to deliver TOGAF enterprise architecture models as well as being an ideal starting position for MDA because it fully incorporates the service paradigm and has clear implementation relationships to BPMN and UML.

The Open Group's newly established ArchiMate Forum has already started its work. “We are currently in the process of standardizing and internationally adopting ArchiMate 1.0 as a global standard,” said Henry Franken, chairman of the Forum. “At the upcoming Open Group conference in Munich (20-24 October 2008), ArchiMate 1.0 will be presented.”

"I am delighted to welcome ArchiMate to The Open Group and look forward to bringing it closer to other industry standards,” commented Allen Brown, CEO for The Open Group.
