DISA Chief Technology Officer Spotlights Role of Open Standards in US Defense

Keynote Address of Dawn Meyerriecks Opens In3 Conference

San Francisco, CA – January 21, 2002 – In addressing attendees at the Integrated Information Infrastructure (In3) Conference, Dawn C. Meyerriecks, CTO, Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), cited the key role The Open Group’s members have played in developing combat support technology.  Her keynote to The Open Group’s In3 Conference was entitled “Enabling Warfighter Decision Superiority: DoD’s Command and Control Infrastructure.”  The In3 Conference opened today and runs through Friday at the Hilton Anaheim.

Ms. Meyerriecks described the systems that “deliver metal on target” and acknowledged the continuing need to partner with consortia such as The Open Group that focus on standards enabling integration of the products that compose those systems.

Much of the keynote address focused on the role of real-time systems in America’s defense program.  Ms. Meyerriecks projected that continued refinement of those systems will make it possible to go straight from visual validation of a target to hitting it.  “Our lives depend on us getting this right,” she noted.  “The technology and standards are mission critical.”

“Ms. Meyerriecks framed the big issue we are tackling with In3,” said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group. “We launched this conference because our members and buyers of information technology such as the Department of Defense have made it very clear that access to integrated information is a primary need.  In this forum, they can address integration solutions with the companies that will create them.”

The Conference includes demonstration of selected solutions, including a demonstration of secure electronic messaging on Tuesday evening that is open to the public.
