Boeing-Sponsored Secure Messaging Challenge Featured at In3

Groundbreaking "How To" on the Exchange of Highly Encrypted Mail

San Francisco, CA - January 23, 2002 - Yesterday evening, The Boeing Company set a precedent with a practical demonstration of secure messaging at The Open Group’s Integrated Information Infrastructure (In3) Conference, which runs through Friday at the Hilton Anaheim.  The demonstration was the culmination of a challenge that Boeing issued The Open Group’s EMA Forum in July 2001:

Enable organizations to exchange strongly encrypted email using a standards-based, vendor neutral architecture that does not require manual key exchange.

"Boeing’s technical requirements sparked enthusiasm among the members of The Open Group to meet the challenge," said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group.  "They seized the opportunity to demonstrate how a sophisticated business problem could be solved using only off-the-shelf and open source products."

The Lynx Consulting Group and Boeing demonstrated the exchange of digitally signed messages moving between offices in the United States and Germany using the following:  3 mail servers (Microsoft Exchange® 2000, Lotus Domino™, and Sendmail), 2 mail clients (Microsoft Outlook® and Lotus Notes®), 2 certificate servers (Microsoft Key Management Server and Lotus Domino) and purchased certificates from VeriSign. Results were validated by Paul H. Evans, Booz-Allen & Hamilton Inc.; David Ferris and Fred Berlack, Ferris Research; Roger Mizumori, an independent consultant; and Jonathan Penn, Giga Group.
