The Open Group Spotlights Shifting Operational Needs Driving SLAs

Boston, MA – July 23, 2002 – A panel of senior executives from The Boeing Company, Covad Wholesale, EMC Corporation, Genuity, and VIEO addressed “End-to-End Service Level Assurances in the Boundaryless Enterprise” at The Open Group’s weeklong conference on Boundaryless Information Flow. Hosted by U4EA PLC, the event launched special sessions of The Open Group’s Quality of Service Task Force.

“In today’s networked world, service level assurances required by the customer must be addressed jointly by vendors and customers,” said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group. “Members participating in our Quality of Service Task Force have shaped their meetings and events to make that happen.”

“There is a gap between experience, technology, and practice when it comes to Service Level Agreements,” noted Dr. Neil Davies, Chief Scientist of U4EA. “This event is a prime example of how buyers and suppliers are taking practical action to close the gap.”

Kathryn Korostoff, founder and President of Sage Research, served as moderator. In her remarks, Korostoff revealed results of a survey on Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that Sage Research conducted for The Open Group. The survey provided the substance of an SLA white paper, available upon request, produced by The Open Group’s Quality of Service Task Force.

Highlights of the interactive event included the following:

· Carl Bunje, an Associate Technical Fellow in Information Systems with The Boeing Company, presented the customer perspective.

· Kimberly Odom, Director of Product Management, Covad Wholesale, described SLAs for the “last mile” from a wholesale service provider perspective.

· Steve Blumenthal, Senior VP & CTO, Genuity (formerly GTE Internetworking and BBN), focused on network Quality of Service, web hosting, and QoS from a major backbone provider’s view.

· David Black, Senior Technologist, EMC Corporation, introduced the data storage perspective into the session, and discussed the need for QoS in integrated management of storage replication.

· Tom Bishop, CTO of VIEO, talked about delivering datacenter-wide management in diverse environments.
