OMG and The Open Group Form Architecture-Related Partnership

Collaborative Effort To Be Launched with Presentation by OMG's Chairman and CEO at The Open Group's "Boundaryless Information Flow: The Role of Web Services" Conference

Needham, MA and San Francisco, CA - June 24, 2002 - Object Management Group™ (OMG™) and The Open Group will formally launch an architecture-related partnership with an address by Richard Soley, Ph.D., OMG's Chairman and CEO, at The Open Group's conference in Boston, to be held July 22-26. Dr. Soley's presentation, "Developing Web Services Using Model Driven Architecture," is a featured part of the conference on "Boundaryless Information Flow: The Role of Web Services."

At the core of the partnership are two complementary initiatives: The Open Group Architectural Framework (TOGAF) and OMG's Model Driven Architecture™ (MDA™). TOGAF is the framework to develop a business-driven architecture. MDA is an architectural approach that assures solid design independence from implementation choices-a model-based, platform-independent development environment, enabling retargeting of applications for rapidly changing application infrastructure.

TOGAF, a step-by-step method and set of supporting tools for developing an IT architecture, is described in a document published by The Open Group on its public web server. It may be used freely by any organization wishing to develop an information systems architecture for use within that organization.

The OMG Model Driven Architecture addresses the complete life cycle of designing, deploying, integrating, and managing applications as well as data using open standards (http://www.omg.org/mda). MDA-based standards enable organizations to integrate whatever they already have in place with what they are building now-and whatever they will build in the future. MDA is a way to define an application architecture independent of the specific language, middleware, O/S, and integration platform so it can be easily integrated with "the next best thing". The MDA relies heavily on the universally supported UML™ (Unified Modeling Language™).

"OMG welcomes this timely partnership with The Open Group as the Web Services applications market heats up. MDA and TOGAF are highly complementary, created as key blueprints for designing improved software applications that will stand the test of time and interoperate with systems already in place (as well as tomorrow's new applications). MDA and TOGAF are well positioned strategically for Web Services development," remarked Dr. Soley.

"The industry at large will see benefits by using both The Open Group's Architectural Framework and OMG's Model-Driven Architecture," said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group. They are both part of the drive toward "Boundaryless Information Flow". The Open Group's vision of "Boundaryless Information Flow" expresses the goal of people in an enterprise having access to information with relevance and purpose, and the ability to exchange it seamlessly, securely, and in a timely manner with customers, vendors, and other business associates.

"This collaboration is a practical way for OMG and The Open Group to act on the objectives of the Executive Coordination Council, which our organizations announced in January," Brown continued. "Our members want to coordinate efforts whenever possible to improve options for technology customers." ECC founders also include the TeleManagement Forum (TM Forum) e- and Telecommunications Information Services (ETIS).

About The OMG

With well-established standards covering software from design and development, through deployment and maintenance, and extending to evolution to future platforms, the Object Management Group (OMG) supports a full-lifecycle approach to enterprise integration which maximizes ROI, the key to successful IT. Based on the Model Driven Architecture (MDA), OMG's standards cover multiple operating systems, programming languages, middleware and networking infrastructures, and software development environments. OMG's Modeling standards, the basis for the MDA, include the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM). CORBA, the Common Object Request Broker Architecture, is OMG's standard open platform with hundreds of millions of deployments running today. OMG's well-established CORBAservices and industry-specific standards are being re-issued under the MDA in many popular middleware environments. OMG domain (industry-specific) standards cover vertical markets including healthcare, telecommunications, biotechnology, transportation and a dozen other areas. The OMG is headquartered in Needham, MA, USA, with a U.S. government representative in Washington, DC, and international marketing offices in Japan, the UK, and Germany.

The Object Management Group is an international, open membership, not-for-profit computer industry specifications consortium. OMG member companies write, adopt, and maintain the organization's standards following a mature, open process. All current OMG specifications may be downloaded without charge from the organization's website, www.omg.org; the site also provides additional information about OMG and its activities. For information on joining the OMG, or questions not addressed on the website, please contact OMG headquarters by email at info@omg.org, by phone at +1-781-444 0404, or by fax at +1-781-444 0320.
