Press Releases
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – March 24,
2004 – The Open Group announced a certification
program for clients and servers that meets the WAP 2.0 specifications
published by the Open Mobile AllianceTM. Clients include mobile
telephone handsets, mobile data clients without voice capability,
and software products that provide WAP browsing capabilities
to mobile data clients such as wireless enabled PDAs.
“WAP certification has gained wide acceptance in the
industry because it provides reliable assurance of interoperability
of WAP applications and devices and gives confidence to mobile
network operators,” said Allen Brown, President and
CEO of The Open Group. “We are pleased to offer certification
of compliance with the WAP 2.0 standard, which offers a number
of new and improved features, including modular architecture,
enhanced security, data synchronization, and service discovery.”
“The Open Group’s WAP certification has many advantages
and creates a great basis for agreements between manufacturers
and network operators,” said Thomas Hucke from Research
and Development, Mobile Phones, Siemens AG. “We look
forward to participating in the WAP 2.0 program.”
“ The end users want to be certain that the device works
well in different network environments,” Hucke continued.
”The Open Group’s program with its flexible start
and 90-days duration, at the right price, enables us to conduct
thorough testing without significantly extending time-to-market,
and helps us provide our customers with the necessary assurance
of compliance.”
"We believe that interoperability is going to be the
top concern for both handset manufacturers and operators with
increasingly rapid rollout of both services and handsets,"
said Arun Tanksali, Director of Product Development, Jataayu
Software. "Jataayu is pleased to participate in the WAP2
certification program announced by The Open Group, which will
go a long way in addressing these concerns. Jataayu strengthens
its commitment to standards and increased interoperability
by contributing its industry leading WAP2 Gateway product
as a reference gateway in the certification program."
