Developers Enthusiastically Embrace the IT "Declaration of Independence" Sponsored by The Open Group

SAN FRANCSICO – July 27, 2004 – The Open Group announced that over 2,000 supporters from all over the world have already signed the “Developer Declaration of Independence within days of its announcement last week.” The Declaration, which is supported by IBM, calls for the adoption and protection of open standards by corporations, governments, organizations, and individuals to ensure a fair competitive marketplace, to give information technology customers freedom of choice and provide interoperability among all vendors.

The Open Group has published the Declaration at http://www.opengroup.org/declaration/ and is asking supporters to visit the web site where they can sign it.

“We have seen tremendous interest in the IT community in supporting open standards against the threats posed by proprietary solutions,” said Allen Brown, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Open Group. ”We are very pleased to see this level of response. Open standards are key for enabling interoperability and access to integrated information within and between enterprises, and we hope that everyone committed to building an open, inclusive IT industry will endorse the Declaration.”
