SAN FRANCSICO – July 27, 2004
– The Open Group announced that over 2,000 supporters
from all over the world have already signed the “Developer
Declaration of Independence within days of its announcement
last week.” The Declaration, which is supported by IBM,
calls for the adoption and protection of open standards by
corporations, governments, organizations, and individuals
to ensure a fair competitive marketplace, to give information
technology customers freedom of choice and provide interoperability
among all vendors.
The Open Group has published the Declaration at http://www.opengroup.org/declaration/
and is asking supporters to visit the web site where they
can sign it.
“We have seen tremendous interest in the IT community
in supporting open standards against the threats posed by
proprietary solutions,” said Allen Brown, President
and Chief Executive Officer of The Open Group. ”We are
very pleased to see this level of response. Open standards
are key for enabling interoperability and access to integrated
information within and between enterprises, and we hope that
everyone committed to building an open, inclusive IT industry
will endorse the Declaration.”
