The Open Group appointed by Multimedia Home Platform Test Consortium to develop MHP conformance test suite

San Francisco, 28 March, 2002 ... A key contract for the continuous development of conformance testing software and tools for the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) has been awarded to The Open Group, the San Francisco, Calif.-based experts in technology enterprise interoperability. Financial details of the contract will not be disclosed.

The Open Group will be responsible for developing additional MHP conformance tests and extending the automated test environment on behalf of the MHP Test Consortium, a body initially comprising Philips, Nokia, Panasonic, Sony, Canal+ Technologies, Alticast and Germany's Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT).

The MHP Test Consortium, formed with the full support of the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) organisation, specifies and develops a very significant contribution to the necessary test suite that will ensure conformity and interoperability amongst all DVB-MHP devices being developed by manufacturers. The MHP test suite will enable products such as digital interactive TV set-top boxes to be MHP-certified, and therefore carry the MHP logo.

The final MHP Test Suite – which will be made available via the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) will comprise significantly more than 10000 individual software tests checking receiver compliance with the DVB MHP 1.0 standard. In addition, the consortium has created a fully Automated Test Environment (ATE) to support the conformance proving process of MHP solutions.

Philip van Houtte, Chairman of the MHP Test Consortium, says: "The Open Group will be a valuable asset to the development and successful market introduction of set-top boxes and integrated digital television sets based on the MHP open standard. MHP is based on the principle of interoperability amongst hardware and applications, and so it is essential to provide a robust and proven test environment to ensure that MHP works with all device, software and connectivity solutions."

"The MHP Test Consortium partners are setting the pace in the field of interactive digital television," said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group. "Choosing The Open Group to develop their test software is a key strategy in ensuring the product interoperability that is vital for rapid growth in this sector. Our aim is always to deliver value to the customer and the team we have in place is skilled and experienced in delivering high quality products to cost and time requirements. We look forward to a mutually beneficial, long-term relationship with all the key players in this field."
