SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 30, 2006 – The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium focused on open standards and global interoperability within and between enterprises, today announced the creation of The SOA/TOGAF™ Practical Guide Project. A collaborative effort spearheaded by members of The Open Group’s recently formed SOA Working Group and The Open Group’s longstanding Architecture Forum, the new project was created to provide practical guidance for enterprise architects on the use of The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) in developing a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). TOGAF is a leading industry standard architecture framework that may be used freely by any organization wishing to develop information systems architectures.
A primary outcome of the project will be a practical guidebook for performing SOA with TOGAF. The practical guide, which is scheduled for release in early 2007, will leverage the industry’s leading research and perspectives on SOA preparation and implementation for architecture practitioners, business executives and IT staff alike. Additionally, the SOA/TOGAF Practical Guide Project will be led by some of the industry’s most innovative and knowledgeable enterprise architects, taking advantage of the combined contributions made by The Open Group’s SOA Working Group and Architecture Forum.
“SOA is an emerging architectural style that needs to be supported by TOGAF,” said Dr. Chris Harding, forum director for SOA and semantic interoperability at The Open Group. “The SOA/TOGAF Practical Guide Project will make a major contribution to the industry-wide understanding of SOA and the use of TOGAF to better align business with IT.”
This initiative will be co-chaired by Dave Hornford, founder and president of Hornford Associates, and Awel Dico, senior architect at Bank of Montreal, both of whom are members of the SOA Working Group and Open Group Architecture Forum.

The mission of The Open Group SOA Working Group is to develop and foster common understanding of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) in order to facilitate alignment between the business and information technology communities. It does this by conducting a work program to produce definitions, analyses, recommendations, reference models, and standards to assist business and information technology professionals within and outside of The Open Group to understand and adopt SOA. A certification program supports the framework. Further information about The Open Group’s Architecture Forum can be found at http://www.opengroup.org/architecture/
