A Business-centric approach to enterprise architecture
The majority of enterprise architecture literature originates in the domain of information systems and information technology. The business community still sees enterprise architecture as a domain of the IT specialists. To overcome the business - IT alignment gap within the enterprise architecture field it is best to use a business-centric approach. The business-centric approach defines enterprise architecture as consisting of a business model, an operating model and the IT architecture ("IS / IT model"). The IT architecture is defined as a derivative model of the business and operating models. A description model to describe the business model is introduced as well a definition of an operating model. These models are required to gain understanding about the object of interest: The Enterprise. The link between a business model and an operating model (on type level) is established. The operating model is defined based on five sub-models. Throughout the whole paper a business oriented language based on business re engineering terminology is used.
